Why are we called Hudson Mohawk Press? Hudson Mohawk Press is named after the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, which come together at the Cohoes Falls in Cohoes and Troy, New York, small cities north of Albany, the capital of New York State. Travelers in the 17th and 18th centuries celebrated the Cohoes Falls as the second most beautiful waterfall in New York State after Niagara Falls. The beauty of the Cohoes Falls inspired artists and writers.
In the 19th century, the massive energy of the Cohoes Falls was harnessed by the growing textile industry and used to power the gigantic Harmony Mills, for a time the largest textile mill in the United States. After the decline of the textile industry, the beautiful flow of the Falls continued to provide energy to the surrounding area, and it still inspires those who take the time to look and ponder.
The flow of the Cohoes Falls is most impressive in the spring, sometimes running at 90,000 cubic feet (2,500m3) of water per second, but during the summer the once mighty falls sometimes are almost dry, revealing shale rock formations that have their own distinctive beauty.
The Cohoes Falls remind us of the vibrancy of the 19th century, when the power of their flow was vital to the industries that would shape the 20th century and the wealth those industries created.
At the same time that the Cohoes Falls were powering new industry at the turn of the 20th century, American metaphysical thinkers in New England and New York were rethinking spiritual matters and putting forth “new thought” – a way of thinking about spirit that would have unimaginable effects well into the 21st century.
This history and this “new thought” inspire our work.
